In poker, there is a saying, "you play the man, not the cards". I thought about this while playing online poker at Celeb Poker. This is probably a more extreme way of looking at things, but there is certainly a fair point to be made here. The cards you are holding should make up much of your decision usually, but that decision can certainly alter against players whose tendancies you may have picked out. Sometimes you will find players being very tight and waiting for a big hand, and it is these players that you can look to make bluffs against more often. Also if you hit a very big hand you can slow play sometimes in order to let them hit something to call you with.

Loose players can often be trapped by slow plays, and I had one instance where this worked out perfectly for me in a tournament. I let a very aggressive player bluff off all their chips to me, but I wouldn’t have played the hand the way I did against any other player at the table.

Not all players have a tendancy to play the same way every each time they sit down, and I am a strong advocate of trying to mix up your play in order to ensure you do not become predictable. If you keep trying to play scenarios in different ways (that do not seriously jeopardise your chips) you force your opponents to make good reads on a constant basis.

So while you can say that your cards, chip stack, position, and other factors are important, playing the person as much as the cards can be a very efficient guideline to choosing the correct play.
